Glenshee chairlifts to go under the hammer for charity

Scotland’s biggest ski centre is offering fans a piece of winter sports history.

Glenshee has announced it will be auctioning off dozens of its old chairlifts for charity.

The seats, which date back to the early 1960s, were used on the resort’s Tiger run and have been removed in preparation for a £2.4 million upgrade.

Glenshee bosses agreed to sell them off after demands from ski enthusiasts who suggested they might make nice garden furniture.

The auction, which will take place in the car park at Glenshee next month, will raise cash for the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance at Perth Airport and Disability Snowsports Scotland.

A spokeswoman for the centre said the sale was arranged by popular demand.

She said 30 to 60 chairs are expected to be sold off, but it is unclear how much money will be raised.

“There will be a certain amount of numbered chairs and some with no numbers,” she said. “They will be bought as seen.”

The chairs will go under the hammer on Saturday October 24 from noon.

The ticket office will open for registration at 11am.

The centre boasts 36 runs and 22 lifts and covers nearly 2,000 acres of slopes across three glens to the north of the Spittal of Glenshee.

The planned overhaul of Glenshee, which will see new lifts infrastructure allowing skiers to reach new heights, was announced by the Scottish Government as part of a major investment in the country’s snow sports industry.
