Union hits out at care homes plans for Perth and Kinross

Plans to overhaul staffing arrangements at care homes across Perth and Kinross have been described as “reprehensible”.

The Courier revealed that carers have been told to either accept new working conditions or face losing their jobs.

It comes as part of a bid by Perth and Kinross Council to save £380,000 and will affect staff at Beechgrove House in Perth, Dalweem in Aberfeldy and Parkdale in Auchterarder.

John Begley, of the GMB trade union said the council’s actions were “the worst” he has encountered in more than 20 years.

He said: “These disgraceful proposals were first revealed some two years ago and GMB were quick to condemn them in their entirety.

“The proposals include a major change to everyone in order that they take part in both nightshift and dayshift, even if these members are contracted to this working pattern, have done it for numerous years and even if they stated they took the post as the hours of work suited their lifestyle.

“There is no shadow of doubt that the imposition of the changes will result in a much reduced service to the residents, but with no reduction in charge.

“I would ask that all elected members demand a full and frank discussion on this issue as this is being carried out under their name.”

A report outlining the changes will be discussed by councillors. These include increasing shifts to 12 hours and introducing a six-week rota with day and night shifts.
