Courier constituency profiles: Glenrothes

The constituency that saved Gordon Brown’s premiership in 2008 will come under close scrutiny again in 2015 as the SNP eye one of Labour’s safest seats.

Standing down as MP following seven years at Westminster, Labour’s Lindsay Roy leaves behind a majority of almost 16,500 votes.

However, bolstered following the independence referendum, the SNP firmly believe they can snatch Glenrothes, buoyed by last month’s local council by-election which saw them take control of the town’s council affairs following a sizable swing from Labour.

The boundary of the constituency extends far beyond the town that gives it its name, taking in the Levenmouth area, Cardenden, and even a small section of northern Kirkcaldy.

Glenrothes has never slipped from Labour’s grasp before and given recent political developments, Lindsay Roy’s majority may yet be the party’s saving grace.

In 2008 the SNP tried and fell short.

This time, however, it is too close to call. The candidates* Peter Grant (SNP) The former Fife Council leader is attempting to make it to Westminster for a second time after failing to take the seat from Labour in a 2008 by-election.

However, with a national swing behind him, Mr Grant will be further aided by his profile as a current local councillor and leader of the SNP group in Fife.

Previously the Glasgow University graduate worked as a physics teacher in Ayrshire and Fife before retraining as an accountant.

He has a professional qualification in public sector finance and has worked in senior local government and NHS finance roles.

* Melanie Ward (Labour) The former charity worker for Christian Aid and ActionAid is also an established anti-poverty campaigner.

Prior to her political career, Ms Ward spent three months serving as a human rights observer in the Palestinian city of Hebron and is a former president of the National Union of Students Scotland.

She has a degree from the University of Stirling and a Masters in International Studies and Diplomacy from the School of Oriental and African Studies.

* Jane Ann Liston (Lib Dems) A former Fife councillor between 1995 and 2007, she has an extensive background in IT.

The St Andrews University graduate is voluntary press officer for Fife Liberal Democrats, is secretary of Railfuture Scotland and treasurer of geoHeritage Fife.

She is already used to the limelight, having appeared on Brain of Britain, Mastermind and a Question of Genius.

* Alex Stewart-Clark (Conservative) A business owner in timber distribution and manufacturing for over 25 years, he is a also a keen volunteer worker both nationally and internationally.
