Call for day to discuss vow on more devolved powers

Pete Wishart MP has written to the Speaker of the House of Commons asking for a full day to discuss the vow of more powers for Holyrood..

A full day should be put aside at Westminster to discuss the issue of more powers being devolved to the Scottish Parliament, according to the SNP.

Perth and North Perthshire MP Pete Wishart has written to Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, after it emerged a planned debate led by Gordon Brown will last half an hour and only involve the former Prime Minister and a Scotland Office minister.

The SNP request came as Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath MP Mr Brown revealed almost 100,000 people have signed a petition demanding promises made by him, Prime Minister David Cameron, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Labour leader Ed Miliband, are kept.

Mr Wishart said: “Gordon Brown has been hopeless in his attempts to hold Westminster and their ‘vow’ to account.”

He added: “Such an adjournment debate as set by Mr Brown is insufficient to address the full range of concerns about the issue of ‘more powers’ promised to Scotland.

“Many voters, in considering how they would be voting in that referendum, were influenced by this ‘vow’ and have since been following with interest the progress of how it will be honoured.”

Mr Brown said he would do “everything in my power” to ensure more devolution is delivered but added, in a swipe at the Conservatives’ plans to have English MPs voting solely on English laws, there must be “no damaging conditions attached”.

Mr Brown said there was no doubt “change” is coming to Holyrood and added: “The real goal is to unite Scotland within the UK by delivering the original promises and new powers intact and not to allow Scotland to be divided from the UK by diminishing the status of Scottish representation, as on budget decision-making on taxes, and distancing Scotland from the UK.”
