One man was killed and two other people were seriously injured in a head-on two-car crash on the outskirts of Arbroath on Friday.

The crash happened at about 3.15pm on the A933 Arbroath to Brechin road near Leysmill and involved a northbound black Audi A6 and a southbound blue Citroen Picasso.

The driver of the Picasso was pronounced dead at the scene, while his female passenger was cut free from the car by firefighters and taken by ambulance, under police escort, to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

The driver of the Audi was also taken by ambulance to Ninewells, where his injuries were assessed and treated.

The deceased’s identity will not be released until next of kin have been informed.

At the accident scene,Sergeant Malcolm Harvey of Police Scotland said: “Local police officers were first to the scene on being made aware of the collision and it was immediately apparent we were dealing with a very serious incident.

“Tragically, I can confirm that one man has died and there are two other people injured.

“The fire and rescue service have worked swiftly to remove those casualties from the vehicles and they are en route tohospital.

“The road has been closed and we have taken the opportunity to speak with the drivers of others vehicles that were in the area at the time.

“The information they have given us will prove useful to our inquiries.”

As darkness fell, crash investigators were at the scene to establish the full circumstances of the incident and were expected to be working under temporary lighting into the evening.

The road remained closed until around 9pm.

Police Scotland has appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident and who has not already spoken with officers to contact them on 101.
