Cowdenbeath crashed out of the League Cup after an agonising penalty shoot-out defeat to Falkirk.

The two teams fought out a 2-2 draw on the opening day of the league season and could not be separated in 120 minutes of this League Cup second-round tie.

Sean Higgins, Lewis Milne and Craig Johnston all had spot-kicks repelled by Bairns hero Jamie MacDonald before Craig Sibbald rolled in the decisive effort in the first round of sudden death.

It was the Fifers who had threatened first, with Lewis Milne pulling his shot just wide in the 13th minute.

About 10 minutes before the interval, Thomas Flynn got his fingertips to a Will Vaulks header and turned it on to the base of the post and round for a corner, moments after another good chance.

It was Flynn to the rescue again for Cowdenbeath in the second half, acrobatically tipping a Durojaiye volley round his right-hand post.

The woodwork saved the home side at the other end with 71 minutes gone as Sean Higgins hit the crossbar with a searing effort from 30 yards but neither side could make the breakthrough in normal time.

On the stroke of half-time in extra-time Falkirk were handed a gilt-edged opportunity to seal the tie when they were awarded a penalty as Nat Wedderburn was adjudged to have brought down substitute Rory Loy but he shanked his spot-kick high and wide.
