Raith Rovers 0 Livingston 4: ‘No excuses’ for Raith’s horror show

Raith Rovers defender Craig Barr apologised to supporters after Saturday’s 4-0 thrashing at the hands of relegation-threatened Livingston.

Rovers were booed off the park in their final home match of the season and Barr, who signed a new one-year contract during the week, admitted afterwards that team had let the fans down.

“The first thing we’ve got to say is to apologise to the fans,” he said.

“That was embarrassing from us and there’s no hiding places.

“None of us came out with pass marks. It’s just disappointing and it’s a hard one to take.

“Livi are still fighting for their lives but there’s no excuses. That was unacceptable from all of us.

“We can only concentrate on next week and try to finish season with a win. That’s the least we can do for the fans and the club.”

Livingston arrived at Stark’s Park knowing that a defeat could have seen them relegated, but Rovers made it easy for them with a lethargic and disinterested display.

The game was only five minutes old when Rovers striker Calum Elliot was stretched off with a knee injury following a heavy challenge from Livingston captain Jason Talbot.

Livi started the game strongly, forcing a series of corners, and it was from one of these deliveries that the visitors took a controversial 21st-minute lead.

Raith thought they had escaped with two goal-line clearances from Rory McKeown and Ryan Conroy denying headers from Declan Gallagher and Callum Fordyce but the assistant referee ruled that the ball had crossed the line and Fordyce was credited with the goal.

The visitors missed a glorious chance to go 2-0 up five minutes later but full back Talbot somehow scooped the ball over the bar from six yards.

The away side punished a goalkeeping clanger four minutes into the second half as Kevin Cuthbert spilled a simple catch allowing Craig Sives to steer the ball into the empty net.

It was 3-0 on 55 minutes as Danny Mullen pounced on poor marking to head home from six yards while Craig Barr headed Sives cross into his own net for Livi’s fourth on 72 minutes.

Raith were given a chance to score a consolation goal from the penalty spot with two minutes left when Gallagher was penalised for a trip on sub Lewis Vaughan, who took the spot kick himself, only to see Darren Jamieson make a stunning save.

Raith boss Grant Murray added: “There were mistakes all over the park. To lose 4-0 is very disappointing. In our second last game of the season we shouldn’t just accept losing by that scoreline.”
