Dundee’s Willie Dyer stunned by fellow defender’s goal spree

Willie Dyer.
Willie Dyer.

Willie Dyer admits he’s been looking on with envy as fellow full-back Gary Irvine has embarked on an incredible goal-scoring spree.

Irvine has netted four times in his last seven games for the Dark Blues, including another against St Mirren last week and it is a rate of return that many a striker would be proud of.

The run is even more amazing considering the fact that previously he had only scored three times in his entire career.

Now, Dyer is hoping that Irvine can continue to hit the back of the net against Hamilton this afternoon at Dens.

He said: “Just give Gaz the ball and he will score at the moment.

“I’m not really bothered who scores for us but it is great what he has been doing.

“As a full-back myself, I would love to have as many goals as he has scored this season.

“He has been doing really well. I think he has hit four in seven games.

“To be fair, he has always scored some good goals in training and it is paying off now.”

Dundee struggled at home earlier this season but have won their last two games at Dens.

Dyer is looking for that run to continue against Hamilton as the Dark Blues players try to make their stadium a fortress to be feared by other teams.

He said: “We certainly don’t want anyone coming to Dens thinking this is an easy place to play at.

“Earlier in the season we weren’t doing too well at home but we didn’t really want to read too much into it.

“We spoke about it internally but we obviously want to make Dens like a fortress and to have teams fearing coming here.

“We will just take each game as it comes and hopefully our positive run will continue against Hamilton.

“Their results haven’t been good recently but they showed how well they can play when they were at the top of the league.

“Everybody expected them to be down at the bottom of the table this season but they are a good side and are really hard-working so we know what we are up against on Saturday.

“I have been impressed with them and we are in for a tough game but we know what we need to do.”

The last time Dundee faced Hamilton in December it was a day to forget with the Dark Blues producing a disappointing performance in defeat with Gary Harkins also being sent off.

However, Dyer insists the players do not have a point to prove today.

He said: “It wasn’t the best of performances the last time we played them in Hamilton.

“But we don’t really want to look back to defeats. Instead, we prefer to look forward and to picking up another three points.”

Dyer is out of contract at the end of this season and he admitted he would love to stay with Dundee beyond his current deal.

When asked if the club had spoken to him about extending his contract, he said: “No, I haven’t heard anything yet.

“I will just concentrate on doing well and try to stay in the team.

“I would like a run of games to get back to full match fitness.

“It has been tough getting back into the team but the boys have been doing really well.

“I just want to stay in the team and then we will see what happens.

“This is a massive club and one I want to continue to be a part of.”

Dundee will be without the injured Iain Davidson, Gary Harkins and Simon Ferry.
