Brechin maintained their grip on fourth spot in League One after they fought back from 2-0 down to draw with promotion rivals Peterhead.

It looked as if Peterhead would go within a point of Brechin with their second win over them in 10 days until Bobby Barr smashed home a 90th-minute penalty.

Gary McDonald had a chance for the visitors on four minutes when he shot narrowly wide, then he headed wide from a corner on 17 minutes.

Brechin had their first chance on 22 minutes when a 35-yard drive from Paul McLean was turned round the post.

Peterhead took the lead on 26 minutes.

Cammy Kerr crossed from the right and McDonald scored with a diving header on the near post.

It was 2-0 three minutes later when a drive from Steven Noble deflected in off Gerry McLauchlan.

Brechin grabbed a lifeline with a goal on 43 minutes.

Barr crossed from the right and Colin Hamilton volleyed home at the far post.

On 53 minutes a Barr shot was turned round the post and from the resulting corner, Andy Jackson had a shot cleared off the line.

Peterhead had a chance to wrap up the points on 73 minutes, but Nicky Riley was denied by a fine save from Graeme Smith.

With 90 minutes on the watch and Brechin throwing everything forward, McLean had a header cleared off the line and Darren McCormack was fouled as he went for the rebound. Barr hammered the spot-kick in off the crossbar.

Brechin boss Ray McKinnon said: “We fought right to the end and we got what we deserved.

“We had a couple off the line and dominated the second half. This could be a big point at the end of the season.”
