Peter Houston to face the man who almost took the top job at Dundee United

Dundee United boss Peter Houston will tonight go head to head with the man who nearly took his job.

Bohemians of Dublin manager Pat Fenlon was a whisker away from taking over at Tannadice 18 months ago after Houston ruled himself out as Craig Levein’s successor following a 7-1 defeat from Rangers.

Houston, of course, had a change of heart and went on to lead the side to Scottish Cup success, while Fenlon stayed on at Dalymount Park to contend with difficult financial times.

Like the Tangerines, Bohs will enter the Europa League at the second qualifying stage on July 14, where they will meet either Slovenians Olimpija Ljubljana or Bosnian team Siroki Brijeg.

They are adamant they will be able to fulfil that fixture despite this week notifying the FA of Ireland of further cashflow problems.

But Fenlon said, “If we cut back any more at the club there will be nothing left. The players have been tremendous and just get on with it.”

Despite their troubles off the park, Bohs still represent a tougher test to United than Sunday’s opponents Drogheda, whom they beat 2-1.

With that in mind, it is expected boss Houston will go with more first-team regulars in his line-up this time, with Jon Daly, Paul Dixon, John Rankin and Willo Flood probable starters.

Meanwhile, the David Goodwillie transfer situation continues to bubble away, with Tannadice chairman Stephen Thompson expected to hold further talks with Cardiff City and Blackpool.

However, it is understood United remain relaxed about the whole thing and are prepared to wait for the right offer to be tabled.
