Motherwell v St Johnstone: Brian Graham tipped to get back among the goals

Brian Graham has swapped Tangerine for blue for the rest of the season.
Brian Graham has swapped Tangerine for blue for the rest of the season.

St Johnstone midfielder Chris Millar knew Brian Graham was a goalscorer when he first saw the then skinny teenager training at Morton.

Now Millar has welcomed his 26-year-old former Cappielow clubmate to McDiarmid Park and is backing him to be a big hit for Saints after joining on loan for the season from Dundee United.

There was an age gap between the players when they were both on the books of the Greenock side but Millar, 31, remembers the up-and-coming frontman, who will go straight into manager Tommy Wright’s thoughts for today’s Premiership match at Motherwell.

“It was about seven or eight years ago that I played alongside Brian when he was a young boy at Morton and I was a little bit older,” recalled Millar.

“He has filled out a bit since then put on more muscle but he was always tall.

“One thing I can say is even at that age he had an eye for goal and always put away chances. His scoring record has been excellent wherever he has been and that was the case at Morton.

“He then carried that on at Raith Rovers and ended up as the top scorer in the First Division for them.

“Indeed, I believe his ratio was one goal every two games, which is brilliant.

“So he is a proven goalscorer and I believe that if you have that knack, like Stevie May for example, then you will be able to hit the target at whatever level you play at.

“You either have that or you don’t. He is a big lad who is good in the air, links the play well and can stick them away.

“We will create chances for him and it’s up to Brian now to stick them away for the team. It’s not a gamble for us, signing someone like Brian.

“He has scored goals at every level he has played at and a proven goalscorer is what we need. We have lost goals through Stevie going and the gaffer has obviously had his eye on Brian. I do think the squad is really healthy now we have signed Brian and Simon Lappin.”
