Serious injury worry for Saints’ Steven Anderson

St Johnstone’s Steven Anderson may have sustained a fractured cheekbone in last night’s Europa League match.

The heartbreak of exiting the competition to Alashkert on away goals was compounded by the fact that seven first team regulars are now injured – among them centre-back Anderson.

Manager Tommy Wright revealed that he has suffered a suspected cheekbone fracture as a result of an elbow from an Armenian player.

“If that had been on the street he’d have been lifted,” Wright said.

“Ando is away to hospital with cheekbone damage, his eye swollen up and concussion.

“It’s quite serious, he’s been vomiting and everything.

“I’ve seen it again, and it was a bad one.”

On the game, Wright reflected: “The referee didn’t cost us. We can play better but we were in control at 1-0 and they had 10 men.

“But we shot ourselves in the foot again.

“It was always going to be difficult to get two goals.

“It shouldn’t have been that easy for them to score. That goal has cost us the game and the tie.”

He added: “Hopefully some of the injured boys will be back soon and we’ll look forward to the start of the season.”

Alashkert manager Abraham Kashmanyan said: “We definitely deserved to win.

“We did our research on St Johnstone and I knew they would pressure us with long passes. My team were ready for this and even with 10 men we controlled the game.”
