WEST FIFE: Show a chilly affair but quality shone through

Glenericht Hester won the interbreed for Allen Drysdale
Glenericht Hester won the interbreed for Allen Drysdale

The sheer number of oilskin jackets, winter hats and gloves being worn might have had spectators and exhibitors alike questioning the June date on the front of the Central and West Fife show catalogue as they entered the showground.

But, despite the gales and the squally downpours, there was no questioning the quality of the stock forward at the event.

Topping the line-up and lifting the Charolais championship, the beef interbreed championship and the “champion of champions” silverware was a strong first calver from the Glenericht herd of Blairgowrie breeder, Allen Drysdale.

Glenericht Hester, a three-year-old by Moyness Saltire and out of Ballmullo Tina lifted the titles for the team from Middle Drimmie, Glen Ericht on her first outing. She was shown with her January-born bull calf, Glenericht Legend by Caylers Gladiator, at foot.

The reserve champion of champions came from the Clydesdale horse lines and went to Jim Neil, Rossiebank, Dunning.

The award went to the impressive Rossie Miriam, a four-year-old homebred mare by Great American GW Carver and out of Dargavel Mairi.

In the sheep lines the interbreed title went to a home-bred Texel gimmer from Malcolm Reid, Grassmainston, Alloa, Clacks. Kelso Venus is by Kelso Prostar and out of a Kingsland ewe and is no stranger to prizewinning, having lifted the interbeed title at Doune and Dunblane last year as a ewe lamb.

The reserve sheep interbreed title went to Stewart Lathangie, Pyestone Farm, Glenrothes for his Suffolk ewe lamb. By Roundacre Real Deal and out of an Ardlea Champion bred ewe she was on her first visit to the showring.

Reserve in the beef interbreed was awarded to Donald Rankin, Kilmaluag, Isle of Skye, for his 14-month-old heifer, Retties Lady Ruth.

Shown by the Retties, the heifer by Rawburn Elysium and out of Wall Lady Ruth, had lifted the reserve championship at the Agri Expo last year.
