A Blairgowrie firm which specialises in LED lighting is looking to staff up after winning a major contract with Dundee City Council.
OCAD LED has a six-figure deal to upgrade lighting in 15 council buildings, including three car parks, schools and other community buildings.
The Perthshire company designs the LED systems, manufactures the components through a Liverpool-based partner and then organises contractors to complete the work.
OCAD is on track to meet its £1 million turnover target this year and aims to double this in 2020.
Managing director Euan Donaldson said: “The company was originally formed to provide an LED solution for the oil and gas market.
“We invested heavily on research and development and launched at the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston in 2015 and then the sector went into recession.
“What we decided to do was use the intel we had learned about LED and flip it from offshore to onshore.
“About a year later we landed our first contract with Sky to do their car parks in Livingston and Dunfermline.
“We’ve since grown quite a big client base of companies like Schuh, Amec Foster Wheeler, Robertson Facilities Management and the NHS.”
Mr Donaldson said the contract with Dundee City Council will involve five Dundee-based contractors and around 30 electricians for 20 weeks.
The upgrades to car parks at Olympia and Greemarket have already been completed, with work at Bell Street scheduled to start next week.
“The lighting we are taking out is old, inefficient with high energy costs,” he said.
“The LED lighting we are putting in will make around 70% energy savings.
“The car park savings are even higher. Unless someone goes into the car park at night and triggers the motion sensors the lights won’t go on.”
Mr Donaldson said he anticipated doubling his workforce to 10 staff in the next year.
