In response to a query by Coupar Angus reader Brian Smith, we gave information on July 21 about a junior trophy called The Jamieson Cup.
It’s full title was The Jamieson Memorial Cup, and it was contested by Perthshire and Angus junior clubs prior to reorganisation of the leagues from 1959 to 1968.
Further information is always welcome but Alyth reader Angus Fleming went one better . . . he has the trophy in his house!
“I read your story on the Jamieson Cup and can reveal it has been sitting in the back of a cupboard in my house for over 40 years,” said the 81-year-old.
“It was contested only by Angus junior clubs.”
Angus also revealed he had a long association on the committee with Alyth United juniors, and remembers great players at the club such as Bertie Rose, Sandy Evans and Ron Sunter, along with a host of others.
Also featured is front and rear photos of the Jamieson Cup (see above).
Names of winners on the back include Kirrie Thistle, Forfar Celtic, Brechin Matrix, Alyth United, Arbroath Vics and East End.
Alyth were the last winners in 1968.
Angus went on: “If any member of the Jamieson family want the trophy, then I would gladly hand it over.
“Similarly, any type of football museum if there is interest.”
On another theme, Angus continued: “I also recall a wee while back someone asking for information on Sid Williamson.
“Sid died a few years ago in London.”
Angus sent in a photo of Sid challenging the goalkeeper in an Alyth United v Newburgh match (see above).
*Back in February, I told of the time I went down to see Dundee United play Manchester United at Old Trafford.
There were several comments.
Jim O’Neill said: “They gave us a wee bit behind the goal but 10,000 Arabs came down.”
Former DC Thomson photographer Ronny Cathro revealed he “covered the game at Old Trafford”, while David Taylor remembered: “Old Trafford was a great experience.”
Steven Blyth reminisced: “I was there, great time, and was 10 years old at the time. My dad put me on the bus from The Dolphin pub in Fintry with his friends.
“It was an experience of a lifetime.”
Michael McCallum said: “I was at both games. Man Utd are my English team. Oh, and also a Dundee fan, so great memories.”
For Grant Howitt, it was: “A great day and night out.
“My only time at Old Trafford and will never be forgotten.
“My all-time favourite away game,” revealed Ian Hurrell, while, for James Connor, it was: “What a trip and what a game.”
Jeff Waddell commented: “The old man took me down on a bus.”
