Blether with Brown: All-conquering Rockets reunite

The all-conquering Dundee Rockets ice hockey squad from years gone by got together again for a reunion.

The venue was the Western Club in Dundee, and Dougie Scrimgeour said: “Former players travelled from other areas to attend such as Jimmy Pennycook from England and Sammy McDonald and Mike Mazur from Perth.

“Guys like George Reid, Molly Reid, Bertie Ross, Willie Murray and Chris Farrell started the Rockets in the old Dundee ice rink and they were all there, too.”

Dougie sent in a photo of the reunion, and continued: “Ed Gorrie was also there and he was the reporter who covered our games under the byline ‘Centre Ice’.

“Rockets won the grand slam in the 1980s, winning all trophies competed for.

“Up to now, nobody else has achieved this record.”

Ed Gorrie had moved on apace when I joined the Tele and he was my first-ever sports editor.

However, he did continue to cover local ice hockey as ‘Centre Ice’ until he retired a few years back.

In the photo Dougie sent in are (back row, from left) — Jimmy Lackie, Peem Lafferty, Jock McGuff, Sandy Bruce, Scott Hudson, Kenny Urquhart, Joe Guilcher, Jim Hudson, Willie Murray, Derek Sheridan, Jimmy Pennycook, Arthur Egan, Ed Gorrie, Dougie Scrimgeour.

Front row — Andy Bell, Molly Reid, Bertie Ross, George Reid, Sammy McDonald, Chris Farrell, Mike Mazur.
