Blether with Brown: Riverside reunion will feature Dundee’s singing taxi driver Jimmy ‘Buble’

Blether with Brown: Riverside reunion will feature Dundee’s singing taxi driver Jimmy ‘Buble’

Local amateur side Riverside Athletic have had many memorable seasons in their 40-odd year history, and their trophy cabinet is usually never anything less than bulging.

One season, though, sticks out for them and they want to celebrate an anniversary of that particular period of 1989-90 and 90-91.

Michael Peoples, who skippered and played centre-half for the side at the time, got in touch to tell me about it.

“Riverside Athletic AFC were unbeaten in season 1989-90 and I am looking to arrange a reunion for the players and committee as this year will be the 25th anniversary of that feat,” said Michael, who has worked for Nova Alarms for many years.

“We won the league that season and were unbeaten, along with a few other trophies.

“I have a picture of the team on the night we achieved this great treble-winning feat.

“This team managed 26 wins out of 26. We had one no show from Logie Harp and received a walkover for that game.

“We also won the Gray Trophy and the prestigious North of Tay Cup, beating NCR 1-0 at Dens Park with a goal from Jackie Devine.

“Our second team were also successful in that they won the Alliance League and two cups.

“We were also among the silverware the following season with retaining the league title (21 wins out of 22, with one draw) and North of Tay Cup, along with winning the new Marquee Trophy.

“The second team again won the league and also the Alliance Cup.”

Michael, who I signed when manager of Bank Street Athletic, continued: “The following season, we were undefeated again with 21 wins and one draw in a new league set-up. These were no easy leagues as we had great rivals in Lawside, NCR, Harris FP, Timex and Tayside Fire Brigade to name a few. They were all good teams.”

Saturday, June 20, is the date earmarked for the reunion, and Michael, who captained the side, went on: “I would like to ask the members of this team, committee and any former Riverside first or second team players to attend a reunion in the Hawkhill Tavern in Dundee.

“I look forward to hearing from anyone who can attend and I have had confirmation that Marc Millar, who went on to star for Brechin City, Dunfermline and St Johnstone to name a few of his senior clubs, will be coming up from Newcastle for this evening.”

Mike’s contact number is 07801 215293 or email at mike@nova-alarms.net or on Facebook.

It looks as if the cabaret on the night is taken care of as well as Dundee’s singing taxi driver Jimmy ‘Michael Buble’ Smart is the alternative contact on 07779 843252.

Jimmy was also a player in that successful River team. However, he was recently involved in a real fairy tale of his own when he was invited down to Newcastle to meet and sing with his hero Michael Buble. Jimmy had hit the headlines with his hit ‘You Tube’ video where he entertains his passengers as he sings Michael Buble numbers as he drives around the city. He has also been in the studio recording ‘Let It Snow’ which he cut to raise money for a local children’s charity.
