Businesswoman accused of conning woman, 89, out of £40k

A businesswoman has been accused of conning an 89-year-old woman out of nearly £40,000.

Sophie Peach, 44, who appeared in private at Perth Sheriff Court, is alleged to have used the internet and physical contact to befriend the elderly woman.

Peach is accused of having “gained her confidence and trust” to gain access to her financial information and obtain her Clydesdale Bank card and pin number.

The petition alleges that Peach posed as the pensioner to book several holidays – including a luxury break to Italy costing £3,451.62 – between September 21 2016 and July 3 last year.

She is alleged to have used the card to withdraw £11,450 from the woman’s account and to have assumed the complainer’s details to set up online and phone banking services to transfer £20,000 to an account in her own name at Santander Bank.

Peach, of Gannochy Edge, Perth, is also accused of posing as the OAP to pay off her own outstanding council tax bill of £1,221.60 and a parking fine of £30.

She made no plea and the case was continued for further examination. Peach was released on bail by Sheriff Gillian Wade.
