Equipment fenced off after vandals target Arbroath playpark

Vandalism at a playpark in Arbroath has been described as “disgraceful” by a local councillor.

The West Links attraction was targeted by vandals last weekend.

Over the course of two nights the culprits damaged three side panels and flooring at the main activity tower.

Council officers have since stepped in to fence this piece of equipment off until new parts can be obtained.

The cost of the repair will run to more than £1000.

The West Links playpark has been repeatedly targeted since it was installed at a cost of £500,000 in 2012.

Just two days after it opened a heavy bollard made of stone was found uprooted.

It was damaged again in 2015 and last July several beer bottles and graffiti was left on the children’s play equipment.

Arbroath councillor David Fairweather said the council was now looking to install CCTV at the site.

He said: “Yet again the council has been left with a large bill for this mindless damage.

“We are going to put up CCTV cameras in this area and I have been assured by the council officers that this is still being progressed.

“At the end of the day we’ve got to catch these immature clowns that are doing this and spoiling what is a fantastic playpark for Arbroath.

“It’s a shame that the council has to spend money on CCTV but this mindless vandalism is simply not acceptable.

“Hopefully the cameras will catch these people in the act in the future.

“Somebody knows who these people are – they might even be boasting about it.

“I’d hope that anyone with information would go to the proper authorities or the police.”

A council spokesman also encouraged anyone with information to contact police.

“Vandalism has led to the fencing off the play park activity tower at West Links in Arbroath,” he said.

“Three side panels and a floor panel have been damaged and the repair, which we hope to do as soon as we have replacement parts, will cost over £1000.

“We believe the vandals struck sometime over the weekend (Jan 21/22) so if you were in the area and saw anything suspicious please report it to the police on 101.”
