A workman operating in Dundee allegedly duped homeowners out of nearly £62,000 with shoddy repairs.

Norman Hughes, 36, of Abbey Road, Scone, is alleged to have conned six householders out of large sums of money adding up to a total of £61,570.

It is alleged he targeted three properties in Dundee and one each in Longforgan, Blairgowrie and Arbroath and failed to complete work or completed it in a grossly negligent and unworkmanlike manner.

At Dundee Sheriff Court, Hughes denied six charges of fraud at six addresses, all between 2014 and 2016.

He denies fraudulently obtaining £24,400 from Johanne Dickson, at Sharp’s Lane, Dundee, between October 2014 and January 2015.

Hughes allegedly pretended to have completed repairs while knowing he had failed to replace guttering, put a chimney cap back on, replace flooring and complete front door work and other repairs.

It is also alleged that the work he had done was not completed to a professional, workmanlike standard.

Hughes denies fraudulently obtaining £4,370 from Patricia Dorovic, at Birks Guest House, Arbroath Road, Dundee, between January and February 2016.

He allegedly pretended to have completed roof repairs while knowing he had failed to replace timbers and slate work, failed to fit a mineral layer and lay torch-on underlay, and failed to remove felt patches and coat fibreglass that had left damp patches.

Hughes denies fraudulently obtaining £7,000 from John Fuller, at Burn Street, Dundee, between September and December 2016.

He allegedly pretended to have completed work for a loft conversion while knowing he had failed to fit a steel beam and a vertical support, failed to install a Velux window, failed to correctly install a light, windowsills and floor joists, failed to install roof timbers and failed to certify electrical work.

Hughes further denies fraudulently obtaining £8,800 from Robert and Gail Ritchie, at Station Road, Longforgan, fraudulently obtaining £12,000 from Susan and Paul Collins, at Coralbank, Rattray, Blairgowrie, and fraudulently obtaining £5,000 from Joan Seal and Garry Mitchell, at Springfield Terrace, Arbroath, all in 2016, by pretending to have completed work.

His trial will take place on March 14.
