Drug mule stopped by police in Dundee with more than £8,000 of heroin

A drug courier caught with more than £8,000 of heroin in his car has been warned he faces a hefty jail term.

William Hawes, 25, was stopped by police on Law Road in the early hours of October 4 last year after police received a tip-off that a man was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard that the car was traced by police with its engine running and Hawes was sitting in the driver’s seat.

Depute fiscal Charmaine Gilmartin told the court: “Police recovered two bags of brown powder in a glove in his trouser pocket.

“The first bag amounted to 51.36g with a value of £1,000 and a potential street value of £2,560. The second bag weighed 122.10g with a scene value of around £3,000 and a potential street value of £6,100.”

A search of Hawes’ home found a set of scales with traces of brown powder, along with caffeine and paracetamol, which are the most common cutting agents used for heroin.

Hawes claimed he had been asked to deliver the drugs “from A to B”.

He pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of the Class A drug. He also admitted driving a car with 40mics of alcohol in 100ml of breath, over the limit of 22mics.

Solicitor Gary McIlravey said Hawes “stopped short” of saying he was threatened with violence to transport the drugs.

Sheriff Alastair Brown said it was clear “there is a particular problem in relation to heroin in the city of Dundee” and that he viewed any offence of dealing the drug to be “particularly serious”.

He added: “I find it very difficult to see anything other than a significant prison sentence can be imposed.”

Hawes, of Court Street, will return to court to be sentenced on December 21.
