A man who was battered by teenage thugs as he tried to intervene in a Dundee school gang fight has said he would do the same again to stop kids being hurt.
Kevin Vials, 51, suffered a broken upper jaw, a broken eye socket and a fractured wrist after stepping into a battle involving children from St Paul’s and Baldragon Academy on Ambleside Terrace on September 28 last year.
At Dundee Sheriff Court, two 17-year-old boys admitted assaulting Kevin.
One was was sentenced to 12 months supervision and placed on a restriction of liberty order between 7pm-5am for five months.
The other had his sentence deferred for the advice of the children’s panel.
Two other boys, also aged 17, pleaded guilty to punching two teenage pupils. One was given 12 months supervision and the other will be dealt with by the children’s panel.
Kevin, from St Mary’s said: “I’m not surprised by the sentences. There is no deterrent for these kids any more. In my day if an adult had come into a situation like that it would have stopped. There is no respect now for adults.”
Kevin, who has children of his own, said he was told the brawl was sparked by a misunderstanding over Snapchat.
He added: “I saw 50 kids and there were three boys getting a kicking. There was one woman covering one of the boys being attacked. I came through the crowd and got one of the lads out. I came back and got the woman and another boy.
“One of the boys had got his front teeth knocked out. I was struck in the face and went down, about five or six of them started kicking me.
“I had a broken upper jaw which I now have four plates in. I had a broken eye socket, cheekbone and wrist.
“If the same thing happened I would do the same again.”
