A man smashed his girlfriend’s car into a lamp-post and overturned it – after borrowing the vehicle without telling her.
Bogomil Pawlowski – who does not hold a driving licence – helped himself to his partner’s keys and drove off from the property they share on the city’s Brown Street.
After having the car for a whole evening, Pawlowski, 25, hit a lamp-post on Princes Street with such force that the lights in a neighbouring property started flickering.
Fiscal depute Lynne Mannion told Dundee Sheriff Court: “His partner believed her car keys were in her handbag and her vehicle was parked outside.
“At 5am a neighbour heard a loud crashing noise followed by the electricity in his home turning on and off. He looked out the window and saw a vehicle lying on its roof.
“He saw the accused climb out of the car window and walk away.”
The witness called police, who found the car and a badly damaged lamp-post close to the junction of Blackscroft and Princes Street.
Inquiries to find the registered keeper led officers to Pawlowski’s partner and their home address. Police attended and Pawlowski arrived a short time later and admitted that he had been driving the car.
At court he admitted taking and driving a car without permission, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and failing to stop and provide personal details after an accident on September 23 and 24.
Sheriff Mark Stewart said: “It’s a very serious matter driving without a licence or insurance, made worse by the fact you took the vehicle without permission. We see the result of that in the dangerous road traffic accident you caused.”
Pawlowski was disqualified from driving for two years, and fined £950.
In the immediate aftermath of the accident, the road was closed as Tayside Contracts repaired the lamp-post.
