Councillor’s bid to call time on Fisherman’s Tavern changes voted down

Dundee councillors have approved plans to remodel the interior of one of Broughty Ferry’s most historic pubs.

Belhaven Greene King, which owns the Fort Street pub, submitted plans in August that would see the snug bar at the rear of the pub removed to allow space for a new female toilet.

A new bar and gantry at the pub would also be installed in the pub.

SNP councillor Lynne Short, a former employee of The Fish, tabled an amendment at Monday’s meeting of the development management committee calling for the application to be refused.

She said she feared granting the application could jeopardise the pub’s unique character.

Ms Short said: “When you go there you feel like you’re going back in time.

“I’m not really keen on the idea of the Fisherman’s becoming another faceless pub.”

Committee convener SNP councillor Will Dawson said he could not see any reasons to refuse the application.

He said: “There are no external alterations and the applicant has advised the internal alterations will be sympathetic to the character of the building.

“Sometimes historic buildings have to be able to move on.”

The committee voted 22 to six to approve the plans.

Broughty Ferry Conservative councillors Philip and Derek Scott both voted to approve the application.

The ward’s two other councillors – the SNP’s Kevin Cordell and Liberal Democrat Craig Duncan – both voted to reject the plans.

After the vote Ms Short said: “I’m thoroughly disappointed.”
