Firefighters using cutting equipment successfully freed a man trapped in his car in what was described as a “very serious” crash on the A92.
A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were able to release the man.
He was then handed over to the Scottish Ambulance Service before being taken to Ninewells Hospital.
His condition is unknown at this stage.
The accident happened on the Dundee to Arbroath Road close to Muirdrum just after noon.
Man trapped in car
One vehicle was involved and landed on its roof with the man still trapped inside.
Eyewitnesses said they saw numerous emergency vehicles on scene.
One said: “I saw fire, police and ambulance on scene. It looked like a very serious accident involving one vehicle.
“The vehicle was on its roof and it looked like the fire brigade were trying to free the person trapped inside.
Horrendous
“It was horrendous to watch. I really hope the person is going to be ok.”
A spokeswoman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: “We received a call at 12.06 alerting us to a road traffic accident on the A92.
“We sent three appliances. One from Carnoustie, one from Balmossie and one from Arbroath.
“One car was involved and our initial reports were that it was on its roof.”

The spokeswoman added: “Firefighters used cutting equipment to free one person trapped in their vehicle.”
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Around 12 noon, on Sunday June 27 2021, police received a report of a one vehicle road crash on the A92 near the Carnoustie turn off.
Road closed
“Emergency services were in attendance and one man has been injured. The road was closed with diversions being put in place.
“The road is currently closed as collision investigators carry out inquiries. “
