A man who was too drunk to stand and was sick on a pub floor was caught by police trying to drive home.

William Murphy had been refused entry to a taxi because of his drunken condition but still attempted to start the car.

The 47-year-old of Hillview, Cowdenbeath, appeared from custody at Dunfermline Sheriff Court where he admitted attempting to drive while five times the limit.

The offence happened on Broad Street, Cowdenbeath, on May 19.

Depute fiscal Claire Bremner said staff in the Silver Birch pub in Cowdenbeath could see Murphy was heavily intoxicated, was unable to walk or stand and was struggling to talk.

A taxi was called but the driver refused to take him because of his condition, the court was told.

Murphy then fell off his chair and vomited on the floor.

Ms Bremner said Murphy had gone outside and when the barmaid went to check on him she saw him inside a black BMW and called police.

When he was apprehended, officers found an almost empty half bottle of vodka on the passenger seat.

The Crown moved for forfeiture of the car but that was opposed by defence solicitor Barbara Collie.

Sheriff Michael P Anderson called for reports and disqualified Murphy from driving until sentencing on June 22.

He was also ordered not to dispose of the car before then.
