Apple appeal for market day

The team behind a Perthshire community garden project is appealing for donations of apples for a special celebration next month.

The event in Coupar Angus will give visitors and locals the chance to make their own fruit juice.

Participants are urged to drop off eating or dessert apples in advance, outside the town’s community-run High Street shop.

The fruit will be pressed and juiced from 10am to 2pm on October 15, which is also the day of the Coupar Angus market.

The day coincides with the start of harvest season.

People are invited to take along screw-capped bottles to collect their juice.

Sharon Dismore, growing development leader for Forward Coupar Angus, said: “If anyone has a tree and is happy to donate the apples, we can juice them and use them at community events, kids’ cooking classes and sell it from our community shop.

“All proceeds will go back to our community here in the town.”

Around 2.5kg of apples will make about one litre of juice.

The community garden, on the edge of town, was set up to offer local families a free place to grow their own fruit and vegetables. It has proved a big hit with local residents and hosts regular events and workshops.

Anyone who has trouble dropping off apples, the group’s scrumping team can be contacted on 07833 938536.
