A celebration of the Gaelic arts at Aberfeldy Mod

Competitors from across Scotland gathered in Aberfeldy to compete in the Perthshire and Angus Provincial Mod.

The annual celebration of Gaelic arts and culture, better known as the Aberfeldy Mod, was held at Breadalbane Community Campus.

Cumbernauld Gaelic Choir were the winners of the May Mitchell and Frances Matheson Quaich for their Puirt A’ Beul (mouth music), and the Westcroft Trophy for their two four-part songs.

The choir also won the Janet MacIntyre Memorial Cup for the highest marks in music.

Aberfeldy and District Gaelic Choir won the Cuach Clachmhor for the highest marks in Gaelic.

In the vocal music competitions, Anne Bennett of Dundee won four trophies for her solo singing, including the Margaret Forbes McLeish Trophy.

In the men’s competitions, John Duff, from Aberfeldy, lifted three trophies, including the Cuach Bhraghad-Albainn for former Mod winners.

In the Junior Mod there was a record number of entrants in the Gaelic medium classes based at Breadalbane Academy from Aberfeldy, Goodlyburn Primary School in Perth and Whitehills Primary School in Forfar.

Eubha Fraser, from Whitehills, won a six trophies in a variety of competitions, including reading, reciting, storytelling, conversation and singing.

Mary Stewart, chairwoman of the Perthshire and Angus Mod committee, said: “We have worked hard over the last few years to continue to build up the Gaelic language and Gaelic culture in Perthshire and Angus and are delighted that this year’s Provincial Mod has been such a successful occasion.”
