Dundee United boss excited by League Cup derby draw

Dundee United boss Ray McKinnon has expressed his delight with a League Cup draw that’s handed him his first city derby as manager.

Friday night’s draw paired the Tannadice Street rivals in the same qualifying group, along with Raith Rovers, Cowdenbeath and Buckie Thistle of the Highland League.

The date and venue of next month’s clash will be revealed later this week but Ray is already relishing the chance to do battle with his old foes.

“I think it’s a great draw and with the season just finished, it means people are already talking about next year and getting excited,” he said.

“For me it’s a great draw for the city and over the weekend people were talking to me about it.

“That shows how much it means to the fans and they can’t wait for it.

“As a player it was a game I always looked forward to and this one will be no different.

“The group as a whole is tough but we’ll be ready for it and, hopefully, we can get through to the knockout stages like we did last year.”

Ray has also thanked experienced full-back Paul Dixon, who is leaving United after a second spell at Tannadice.

The 30-year-old has already been linked with a move to Plymouth Argyle, for whom United legend Craig Brewster is assistant manager.

Dixon, who previously had three successful years down south with Huddersfield, has also expressed a desire to play abroad and is likely to consider his options before committing himself to a contract anywhere.

“We did offer Dicker another year here but I understand why he wants to try a new experience at this stage of his career,” added Ray.

“He’s a very good pro and always great to work with. He had a tough time with injuries last season but each time he was out he worked had to get back as early as possible and when he came back during the play-offs he played well for us.

“I would like to thank him for his efforts and I hope he gets the move he wants because he deserves it.”

With Jamie Robson emerging as a strong contender for a regular starting spot next season, United already have a recognised first- team left-back on their books but could look to sign another to provide competition for the role.

Among the other targets on the manager’s list is an experienced striker.
