Dunfermline 1 Dundee United 1: Honours even at East End Park

It was honours even at East End Park as Dunfermline and Dundee United fought out an entertaining draw.

The Tangerines opened the scoring with a stunning strike by Tony Andreu but the Pars equalised through John Herron.

There were plenty of further chances for a winner but both sides ultimately had to settle for a point.

Dunfermline manager Allan Johnston made two changes from the starting XI that beat Alloa in the Scottish Cup last Saturday with Jason Talbot and Michael Moffat replacing Lewis Martin and Gavin Reilly.

Dundee United boss Ray McKinnon made five changes from the side that was beaten by Ross County in Dingwall last week with Paul Dixon, Lewis Toshney, Blair Spittal, Willo Flood and Thomas Mikkelsen coming in for Simon Murray, Jamie Robson, Charlie Telfer, Tope Obadeyi and Sean Murdoch.

The Pars had a big chance to open the scoring in just the eighth minute. Nicky Clark robbed Mark Durnan before advancing on goal and squaring the ball to Michael Moffat but his measured shot was half blocked by United keeper Cammy Bell with William Edjenguele clearing off his own line.

However, McKinnon’s men took the lead 10 minutes later in spectacular fashion. Andreu’s initial shot was blocked but the ball broke straight back to him and the on-loan Norwich player cracked an unstoppable shot from 22 yards past the despairing dive of Dunfermline keeper Sean Murdoch and into the corner of the net.

United’s tails were up and Spittal clipped the outside of Murdoch’s post shortly after with a long-range effort.

The Pars, though, drew level in the 28th minute when Kallum Higginbotham had all the time in the world to send a tempting cross in from the left with Herron beating Bell to the ball to head home for what was his first goal for the club.

United came storming back and Murdoch twice had to make vital saves to deny Mikkelsen with the second stop an outstanding point-blank effort.

Bell, who was injured when the Pars scored their goal, had to be withdrawn at half-time with Luis Zwick taking his place between the sticks.

The home side had a chance to take the lead in the 53rd minute when Higginbotham pulled a free-kick back to Nate Wedderburn but his goal-bound shot was blocked.

The Tangerines then had an even better opportunity when Scott Fraser danced his way into the Pars box and cut the ball back to Mikkelsen but the striker’s shot was blocked.

Andreu had a clear sight of goal in the 75th minute but Murdoch saved his initial shot and then the United man wildly blazed the rebound over the bar.

Ten minutes later, Murdoch had to pull off a stunning acrobatic save high to his right to keep out a Spittal 22-yard free-kick and then sub Simon Murray cracked a shot just inches past the post as United piled on the pressure.

However, Dunfermline held on to secure a draw.
