Brechin City took a giant step towards preserving their League One status with a 1-0 win over Stranraer.

The win takes Brechin out of the bottom two on goal difference over Cowdenbeath with one game to play.

They now face an Angus derby against Forfar with the objective of matching Cowdenbeath’s result away to Stranraer to avoid a relegation play-off.

A delighted Brechin manager Darren Dods said: “We were written off at the start of March, but it has been a fantastic squad effort. We have one game to go and need one more massive effort.”

Brechin had an early scare on five minutes. A shot from Andy Stirling was parried by Graeme Smith and a follow-up from Mark McGuigan was cleared off the line by Paul McLean.

Robert Thomson smashed the ball just wide of the top corner on 11 minutes, then as Brechin took control, Andy Jackson was denied by the feet of keeper Cameron Belford on 27 minutes.

Watt twice went close with shots, then on 37 minutes, McLean had the ball in the net but was given offside.

Just before half-time, a shot from Thomson was deflected wide. On 71 minutes, a shot from Jamie Robson forced a diving save from Belford.

Brechin got the goal they deserved on 81 minutes. A free-kick from Willie Dyer was headed down by Thomson and Robson squeezed the ball under the keeper.

The home side almost scored a second on 85 minutes when the ball came off the head of defender Kyle Turner and hit his own post.
