Montrose boss not thinking about reclaiming top spot

Montrose were knocked off the top of the League Two table on goal difference by Peterhead 11 days ago.

However reclaiming first position won’t be on manager Stewart Petrie’s mind at Cowdenbeath today.

“There are still plenty of points to play for so we have not looked too much into things in terms of league placings,” said the Links Park boss.

“Placings just now do not matter.

“We started the season looking to get enough points to avoid finishing bottom and we have done that. The next target is to get enough points to get into the top four and we are still looking to do that. Anything that comes after that we will think about then.

“There will be twists and turns to come and the rise Montrose made in the last quarter of last season showed the value of winning in this final run of games and how things can change.”

Petrie is however looking for better from his men after their 1-1 draw with Cowdenbeath that brought in 2018.

He noted: “They deserved to get something from that game. Our performance was disappointing so we will look to do better this time out.

“Cowdenbeath will be very difficult opponents. Gary Bollan has been in working with them for a while now and whilst we need points to keep going at the top of the table they need points to get away from the bottom.

“They still have time to go on the type of run that took Montrose off the foot last season and up the table.

“This will be a difficult game but I have confidence in my players that they have the resilience to get a win.”

Martyn Fotheringham is available after serving a ban however Graham Webster is suspended and injuries have ruled out Matty Allan and Iain Campbell.
