Third time’s the charm for the Mercedes SLK Roadster

Mercedes are releasing what will be only the third version of the SLK Roadster.

The original, you will recall, went on sale way back in 1996. It was replaced in 2004 so the new version, which will go on sale in the summer, is long overdue.

The new model will come with a choice of three engines two 1.8 litre petrol units with 184 or 204bhp and a 306bhp, 3.5 litre V6.

It’s likely to be the first SLK to have a diesel option, though this won’t arrive until later.

All versions will come with stop-start and other measures to improve economy, and the most efficient of the petrol models should average around 46mpg.

Buyers have a choice of three roofs for their car a conventional folding hard-top, one with a tinted glass panel and the ‘Magic Sky Control’ roof.

This last promises to be something quite special. A layer of liquid crystal enables occupants to switch the glass roof from transparent to tinted glass at the touch of a button. This should make you feel like you’re in Star Trek.

When tinted, it keeps the car cool from the sun’s rays, while the clear glass mode gives an open air feeling when it’s too cold to have the top down.

A manual gearbox will be standard, with a seven-speed auto a cost option. There will be three suspension options a conventional set-up, sports suspension and the more expensive electronically-controlled package.

It goes on sale over here in June. Prices haven’t been announced yet, but expect them to start at around £30,000.
