Tayside Police have named the man who died in an accident on the A9 south of Perth on Wednesday night.

He was 85-year-old Michael Agnew of Darroch Way, Cumbernauld, whose Fiat Panda collided with a stationary police vehicle near the Aberuthven turn-off.

Mr Agnew was travelling in thick fog on the A9’s northbound carriageway between Perth and Stirling when the accident, involving a marked police Land Rover, took place on Wednesday.

Emergency services, including two ambulances and a trauma team from Ninewells Hospital attended at the scene, around one mile north of the Aberuthven junction, shortly after 7pm.

Mr Agnew was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two police traffic officers were treated at the scene for minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment.

The northbound carriageway was closed for several hours while crash investigators worked at the scene and diversions were put in place.

A full report on the incident will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

The accident took place in miserable conditions on the A9, with visibility poor in the fog and the road treacherous despite gritting.

Motorists travelling on the road described the surface as akin to “a sheet of ice.”

A short time before a silver Peugeot left the A9’s southbound carriageway before coming to rest in a ditch.

Anyone who witnessed the collision in which Mr Agnew died is asked to contact police on 0300 111 2222.

A study last year showed there were more accidents and fatalities on the dual carriageway stretch of the A9 from Dunblane to Perth than the mainly single carriageway and far higher profile route from Perth to Pitlochry.
