SFA looks into Scotland Under-21 match chaos at Tannadice

Fans were still queuing to get into the match 30 minutes after kick-off.
Fans were still queuing to get into the match 30 minutes after kick-off.

The SFA has launched an internal probe into chaotic scenes at Scotland’s Under-21 match against Hungary at Tannadice Park in Dundee.

Hundreds of fans attending Wednesday night’s match were still outside the ground more than half an hour after kick-off, with many contacting The Courier to complain about the “organisational farce”.

An SFA spokesman said that an internal debriefing took place yesterday and that the association would be speaking with Dundee United to ensure a similar situation “never happens again”.

The matter was also discussed at a routine match debriefing at Tannadice on Thursday.

A Dundee United spokesman said: “Based on previous Scotland U21 match attendances, we were advised to expect an attendance of up to 2,500 and after consultation with all parties, including the SFA, appropriate resources were approved and deployed accordingly.

“However, on the night, almost double this number attended the match and the level of resource proved inadequate. We apologise for the situation and lessons have been learned for the future.”

Scotland fans continued to bombard the Courier website and Facebook page with complaints about the organisation of the event.

Gwen Shields said: “We started queuing at 6.55pm and were far back as the edge corner of the ground. I believe the queue at the other side was back along near Arklay Street at that time.

“For the SFA statement to say that a large crowd near starting time arriving at once caused the congestion is ridiculous.

“There were only three turnstiles opened at that time, and the only reason that we moved forward at any time was thanks to the many supporters who turned and left.

“I finally got into my seat at 8.10pm. The radio during the day asked supporters to turn up to encourage more national football events to come to the city.

“Let’s hope the next one is more organised.”

Ray Thomson said: “I was with my son at the cash gate waiting for 40 minutes, during which time one of the stewards took down the cash gate sign and let ticket holders through it.

“When I got there my son handed over his ticket and went through the turnstiles.”

He continued: “I handed over my cash and was told they were no longer taking cash at that gate and left me outside arguing the fact my son was inside and I was outside.”
