Cancer Research UK supporter Elliot Melville is a right crawler

A Dundee University student got on his hands and knees to raise money for charity at the weekend.

Elliot Melville (19) intrigued passing shoppers as he repeatedly crawled through Dundee city centre on Sunday to drum up cash for Cancer Research UK.

He inched the circuit between the front of the Wellgate and the back of the Overgate shopping centres over and over.

Having set a target of eight miles, he managed over five before having to surrender to cold and pain. With some understatement, he described this as “good for a first try!”

After setting off from the Wellgate at 10.20am, Elliot eventually ended his challenge over eight hours later.

However, he did have some moral support in the shape of around 20 of his friends who took turns to complete laps with him and carry buckets collecting donations.

At one point a homeless man, moved by Elliot’s attempt, emptied his cup into a bucket.

“The inspiration to do the crawl came from my friend David Banks who did the same thing in Buchanan Street in Glasgow for the people affected by the Haiti earthquake,” Elliot said.

“He’s been helping me and helping focus my training to help finish the full distance.”

Elliot undertook a strenuous training regime in preparation for the gruelling challenge, including crawling across the Tay Road Bridge, and admitted the strain of the “cat crawl” tested the limits of his endurance.

Nevertheless, the effort has paid off, with more than £1200 already raised. Donations are still being accepted online at www.justgiving.com/Crawl-For-Cancer
