Former Coupar Angus sub-postmaster David Simpson

David Simpson, who was the sub-postmaster in Coupar Angus for 25 years, has died aged 87.

Mr Simpson was born in Perth and attended Perth Academy before starting a career with the Post Office at the age of 14.

His first role was to deliver telegrams by bicycle in Perth.

His career was interrupted by national service with the Black Watch and the Duke of Wellington’s regiment in Sudan and Palestine.

He married Elsie in 1949 and the couple had two children, Lesley and Lorraine.

He took over the Coupar Angus post office at Causewayend in 1964, which he operated until 1989.

Upon his retirement he received a letter from the chairman of the Post Office thanking him for his 48 years of service.

After his first wife’s death in 1982, he met Jacqueline, whom he married in 1985.

The couple moved from Coupar Angus to Roudyhill, near Glamis, after Mr Simpson’s retirement.

He was a keen footballer for Kinnoull Juniors, playing until the age of 46.

Heart of Midlothian once tried to sign him, but Mr Simpson opted to stick with his career in the Post Office.

He also enjoyed fishing, snooker and travelling.

He is survived by his two children, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
