A Dundee mother fears she will have to move home after a drug needle was found in the close leading to her home.
Brogan O’Rourke, 23, from Maryfield, was left stunned when she found a needle covered in blood at the entrance to her block of flats on Crescent Street, as she went to pick up one-year-old daughter Renesme.
The buzzer-operated door that allows people into the block is broken, allowing people to freely enter the close.
The risk to her daughter has made the young mum want to move to a new home urgently as she no longer feels safe in the area.
She hopes to leave within the next few weeks.
After making the find, Brogan said: “I want to move house as soon as possible, it’s just not safe for a family here.
“My daughter can now walk around and, if she had managed to get out to the close, who knows how bad it could have been?
“This isn’t the first time that this has happened. I found a needle in my garden just a few months ago and there have been other times I have seen people outside doing drugs.”
She admits even though she had seen needles around the street before, she was shocked to find them on the inside of her building.
She said: “I was absolutely gobsmacked when I found it. They were almost at my front door.
“If my daughter had managed to get down the stairs she could have fallen or picked it up and the blood on it is so dangerous.
“I came back about five minutes later with my daughter and everything was gone, so they must have decided to come back for it. I think that makes it much worse, because it means they broke in twice.”
Brogan stated that police officers told her they could not do anything about the incident if they had not seen the person injecting a drug.
She said: “The police came to the scene but they said we need to catch them doing it before there’s anything that they can do.
“They told me that it is pretty rare to see needles out during the day. There has been a couple of times I have noticed people doing drugs at night in the garden but I agreed with him.
“I can’t think of a time where they’ve been out during the day so I’m guessing it’s not that common.”
Police Scotland did not provide comment on the incident after an officer attended the scene.
