A man has appeared privately in court in Dundee accused of stealing a car before driving dangerously at “grossly” excessive speed and causing the car to smash into a wall in a city street.

Philip Shaun Christie, 30, of Beauly Crescent, appeared before Sheriff George Way on a petition which also alleges theft by housebreaking at two separate houses on Troon Road and Gleneagles Avenue.

He is alleged to have stolen a Seat Leon car from a house at 113 Gleneagles Avenue, along with, from both houses, games equipment, cash, keys, driving licences, wallets, bank cards, jewellery and various other items.

Christie is also accused of driving without a licence or insurance, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report the accident, which occurred at Harestane Road in Dundee on January 2.

He made no plea or declaration and the defence made no motion for bail.

Christie was remanded in custody while the case was continued for further examination.

Dundee councillor Lesley Brennan was out walking her dog when she saw the accident happening and asked another driver to call an ambulance.

Police were also called and cordoned the badly damaged car off during their inquiries.

l As a result of the incident, Strathmartine councillor Kevin Keenan has called on the city council’s transport manager to take action to improve road safety around the junction.

Mr Keenan has written to Neil Gellatly saying the recent accident shows to him and other residents that this particular junction is a potential accident blackspot.

In an email to Mr Gellatly, Mr Keenan said: “Over the years, there have been a considerable number of accidents at this junction or within at least 50 metres of it.

“You are aware from previous meetings with myself and Bailie Borthwick that we both have considerable concerns about Strathmartine Road heading out towards Bridgefoot as with the new development, the increased number of homes has brought with it an increased number of vehicles using this road.

“I wonder if your statistics reflect my own opinion and those of some local residents that action needs to be taken to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety in this area of the city.”
