Dundee Tattoo Convention to return after making its mark in 2013

A visitor is tickled by all the attention at last year's convention.

The Dundee Tattoo Convention returns next month after drawing hundreds of visitors last year.

The event will host more than 50 artists from across Scotland, and is expected to attract more than 500 people.

The skilled maestros will perform hundreds of tattoos over the two-day conference, which is being hosted at Abertay University.

The convention, which enjoyed tremendous success last year, was recently given the green light by the city council’s licensing board.

Many of the tattoos will be booked so that artists can demonstrate their talent on complex designs, although there will be a chance for walk-in appointments.

Organiser Ky Thomasson-Kay, who works in the tattoo industry, said this year’s event will be even better than the last one.

He said: “We have got 52 really talented artists from all over Scotland and there are more from the west coast this year, which is great.

“We also have a real up-and-coming artist called Luke Sayer coming up from England where he works.

“Having him is really quite a coup for us he is young but very talented.

“It is quite a big draw to have someone of his calibre coming.

“Last year we had about 500 or 600 in people.

“The convention is still a work in progress and we are finding the right formula.

“We are hosting at Abertay again, which is a great venue. There is so much natural light in there, which is very different to a lot of convention centres, and the artists love it.”

The Dundee Tattoo Convention is taking place on Saturday August 16 and Sunday August 17.

One woman who attended last year’s event, Karin Robbie, said she had a fantastic time.

She said: “I think it’s great and the staff make you feel so at ease.

“They do not push you into any decisions you do not want to make and all my friends think my tattoo was amazing the quality of the work was outstanding.”
