ByThe Courier Reporter
The 17 Dundonians who died fighting in the Spanish Civil War have been honoured at a special commemoration in the city.
Organised by the Dundee TUC and the International Brigade Memorial Trust, the event took place on the nearest Saturday to February 12, the day in 1937 when the British Battalion of the International Brigades saw its first action at the Battle of Jarama.
Mourners gathered at the memorial plaque in Albert Square, laying floral tributes and holding a minute’s silence.
They then joined in singing Jarama, a song commemorating the International Brigaders who fought in the battle.
A number of 75th anniversary events have taken place over the last three years, marking events between 1936 and 1939, with the anniversary of the return of the Dundee contingent from Spain in 1938 being marked last December.
The 17 Dundonians who died in Spain were John Alexander, James Cockburn, Matthew Cox, Allan Craig, Andrew Finnan, Francis Peter ‘Frank’ McCabe, John ‘Patsy’ McEwan, William McGuire, James McHugh, John McLanders, John D Mudie, James Murray, John Bruce ‘Jock’ Ness, David Samson, Malcolm Smith, Alexander Kenneth ‘Ken’ Stalker and John ‘Jock’ Tadden.
