Council spent £23,000 on repairs to Dundee bowling pavilion then decided to close it

Dundee City Council chiefs spent almost £23,000 repairing a bowling green pavilion scheduled for closure in a cost-cutting exercise.

At last month’s budget meeting, councillors agreed to close the city’s Baxter Park and Victoria Park bowling greens to make estimated savings of £30,000.

They had been identified as the two poorest performing in the city and work is already under way to bulldoze the former.

Councillor Fraser Macpherson fought unsuccessfully to save the Victoria Park facility in his West End ward, which is fenced off and with its future uncertain.

He has now slammed the closure once again following the revelation that nearly £23,000 was spent on repairs to the pavilion in the past 12 months.

He said the discovery “made a nonsense” of claims the closure of the bowling greens would save money.

Dundee City Council said the money had been spent on “urgent” repairs required on “safety grounds” and that the investment had been made “several months before any recommendation on future closures was considered”.

A spokeswoman added: “Although the decision was taken by committee to close the bowling green, that does not rule out the possibility of the building asset being used or transferred to others rather than being abandoned or demolished.

“Some form of asset transfer would be a more attractive outcome and is something that will be actively pursued.”

Mr Macpherson believes the bowling green should never have been closed.

He said: “In the West End, we are lucky to have excellent private clubs like Hillcrest and Balgay, but for people unable to afford an annual subscription or residents just wanting an occasional game without a recurring subscription, council bowling greens provide that facility.

“The bowling green at Victoria Park has a lovely setting and it is a crying shame to see it dismantled.”

He added: “The environment director has said the council will consider possible alternative uses for the pavilion and green, but so far there appears to be no proactivity to progress this.”
