A 103-year-old great-grandmother from Dundee has been named Curry Lover of the Year at a national awards ceremony.
Margaret Phillips, dubbed the “nan who loves naan”, puts her good health and long life down to her favourite cuisine.
She developed a love for curry during two spells living in India as a young woman and would regularly hold curry suppers for friends and family.
The centenarian will celebrate taking the title at this year’s Scottish Curry Awards by sharing her favourite dish – prawn madras – with fellow residents at Bupa’s Balcarres Care Home.
Her daughter Jacqueline said: “The whole family is thrilled that she has won. It was a huge surprise when she was initially nominated, but we honestly cannot think of anyone more deserving of the title.
“We would like to thank everyone who voted for her. It’s a very special achievement and the whole family is incredibly proud of her.”
Mrs Philips, who turns 104 in the summer, lived in India with husband William between 1937 and 1940, and later for 11 years from 1946 when she remarried following the death of William.
Her grandson picked up the award on her behalf at Glasgow’s Marriott Hotel on Monday.
Lynn McLean, manager at the care home, said: “She is unfortunately unable to get out and about as much as she used to, so wasn’t able to attend the ceremony, but we think a curry night will be a fantastic alternative.
“Margaret is such a pleasure to be around and very popular with everyone who lives and works here. We’re all absolutely thrilled for her and her award win.”
