Concern after Travellers graze horse at roadside in Dundee

Travellers are using land by one of Dundee’s busiest roads to graze a horse.

For around two weeks, seven caravans have been parked at the former Etal site in Dundee Technology Park, with a number of large boulders around the area having been moved.

Now four more caravans have pitched up in a car park nearby, spilling over on to the grounds of another building.

One dog walker claims the Travellers are using land near Riverside Drive to graze a horse.

He said: “About two nights ago when walking the dog, I saw one of the Travellers walk a horse out on to the stretch of grass next to Riverside Drive.”

West End councillor Fraser Macpherson has urged the landowners of the other occupied sites to take legal action to stop Travellers occupying the camps.

He said: “This problem isn’t just exclusive to the Technology Park, it also affects other parts of Dundee.

“If it’s not on private land, the council can take action, but when the sites are set up on private land, that’s when the landowners have to step up and take action.

“I have been in regular contact with the site agents who act on behalf of the private landowners and urged them to take legal action to move the Travellers on.

“Action was taken by the owners of the Client Logic site which was successful thereafter the Travellers moved a matter of yards to the Etal site, where they had to move boulders to gain entry.

“The legal action does work.”

As well as urging legal action to evict the Travellers, Councillor Macpherson also reiterated the need to find a resolution to the ongoing issue.

He added: “There needs to be a resolution for the amount of illicit sites cropping up throughout Dundee.

“And I feel I must say again there is a dedicated site for Travellers at Tealing.

“But the bigger issue is to establish a wider network of Travellers’ sites throughout the country, which would have to be taken up with Cosla (Convention of Scottish Local Authorities).”
