A man who set fire to part of his ex-partner’s house after she banned him from seeing the couple’s daughter was jailed.
Andrew McKay locked himself inside his ex-girlfriend’s flat in Cheviot Crescent after calling the police and saying: “Suicide is on your hands”.
When police arrived McKay then shouted: “I’ve got a can of petrol and I’ll blow it up and any police officer who comes in I’ll take them out.”
The police backed off as McKay set fire to a bed and a set of curtains. Fiscal depute Douglas Wiseman told Dundee Sheriff Court that McKay realised how quickly the curtain fire was escalating, and tried to put out the flames himself.
He said: “Police forced entry and made their way in the flat was thick with smoke.
“The accused was found on the living room floor apparently waiting for police. Fire officers entered and extinguished the fire in the living room. The fire in the bed had already burned out.
“The senior fire officer’s opinion was that the accused had deliberately set the blazes.”
McKay, 20, of Luffness Walk, Dundee, pleaded guilty to wilful fireraising.
Jim Caird, defending, said: “He’s thoroughly ashamed of himself for this very serious matter.”
Sheriff Tom Hughes deferred sentence on McKay until next month for social work background reports. McKay was remanded in custody.
