Repairs to a burst water main in Pittenweem have been completed, according to Scottish Water.

The update was given to The Courier shortly before 5pm on Monday as Fife Council confirmed that two primary schools and a children’s nursery which were forced to close as a result of the disruption should reopen as normal on Tuesday.

Elie Primary, St Monans Primary and St Monans Nursery were amongst properties forced to close on Monday as a result of the burst which left parts of the East Neuk without water for much of the day.

The burst on a 9 inch main in a field near Viewforth Place in Pittenweem affected normal supplies to around 250 properties customers in the Pittenweem, Elie, St Monans, Abercrombie, Kilconquhar, Earlsferry and Colinsburgh areas.

Residents and businesses were left in limbo and directed towards bottled water – as they waited to see when supplies might be restored.

The leak was discovered in a field near Viewforth Place at around 6am and engineers travelled to the village to carry out repairs.

A large hole was dug in the field as Scottish Water investigated the source of the problem.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: “When normal supplies do return, there is a possibility that some affected properties will experience discoloured water as the system recharges.

“If so, customers should run the cold water kitchen tap until the water runs clear.

“We apologise for any inconvenience to affected customers and thank them for their patience and understanding.”
