The newest recruit at Fife Police will help officers sniff out crime.
Villains will be given ‘paws’ for thought after German shepherd Kate made her first public appearance at police HQ in Glenrothes since transferring from the Metropolitan Police.
She is just 10 weeks old but while she may look cute, when it comes to apprehending criminals she is as determined as the most hardened detective.
The police bought Kate from the Met after an impressive fundraising effort by the family of a local officer who died tragically earlier this year.
Allan Green, who was a freedom of information officer, died after an accident at his Edinburgh home.
Kate Winslet was the film fan’s favourite actress and so the new recruit was named after her.
His partner, Maria Daly, said: ”Allan used to enjoy seeing the police dogs being trained outside of his office window. We decided that rather than have flowers at his funeral we would ask for donations instead, and felt that buying a police puppy in his honour was an appropriate way to spend the money raised.”
Kate is now being looked after by dog handler PC Lynn Law, who said: ”Our intention is to allow her to enjoy her puppyhood, but start with initial ‘play’ training when she is 12 weeks old. We will continue that until she is 15 months old when an intensive three-month training period will begin.
”When that is completed she will become a valuable addition to the service and a fitting and lasting memorial to Allan’s memory.”
