Fourth birthday is one to remember for leap year girl Bridget

Fife girl Bridget Kerek does not understand why her family joke about her being only one year old but the four-year-old from Cupar gets her reward today as she celebrates her first ‘official’ birthday.

That is because Bridget is a leap year baby and technically only has a birthday once every four years.

Her mother Jess told The Courier: ”I was very conscious of it being a leap year at the time of her birth. Bridget had been due on February 22 2008 but didn’t arrive until February 29 after a twice-postponed caesarean delivery at Kirkcaldy’s Forth Park Hospital.

”There were five others born that day as well and we all made a wee thing of it. We made the decision instantly that Bridget should celebrate her birthday on the last day of February every year so she’s not been deprived of a cake over the years!

”She’s too young to really understand, but we’ll be doing something a bit special this year with it being February 29 and her first ‘official’ birthday.”

Bridget, who attends Westfield Nursery, will celebrate with brother Thomas (10) and sister Liliom (7) and parents Jess and Szabolcs.
