The Halbeath site, outlined, which could be the location of a new development of car dealerships.

Dunfermline could be handed the keys to a new £5 million motor mile development on the outskirts of the town.

Plans have been submitted for a new car retail development on the site of the recently demolished Kingdom Services in Halbeath.

Ashfield Land is seeking planning permission for a development of four car showrooms that it estimates will provide dozens of new jobs.

The property development company claims car sales are on the rise, as people become more confident about spending their money, citing the economic recovery and an improving commercial property sector.

Last month saw the 28th consecutive month of rises in new car sales and means that sales for the year so far have reached more than 1.28 million a 10.6% rise on the first six months of last year.

There were 228,291 new registrations in June, a 6.2% rise on the total for June 2013, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

It also stated that total new car sales are likely to reach 2.4 million in 2014, up more than 6% on last year.

The new proposal, situated fronting the A92 and close to J3 of the M90 Edinburgh to Perth motorway, is a bid to build on the success of the nearby Fife Leisure Park and retail developments, as well as the adjacent Halbeath park and ride.

The plans would see the creation of up to four single-storey units ranging in size from 10,000 sq ft to 15,000 sq ft.

Planning consent already exists for a mixed/car retail use on part of the site.

Steven McGarva, who heads Ashfield Land in Scotland, said: “The plans demonstrate the improving state of the economy and, consequently, of the commercial property market and the greater confidence of developers to press ahead with investment.

“The development will help generate new jobs and investment opportunities.”

Agent Neil McAlister, of Ryden, said: “We have been working with Ashfield over the past few months to refine plans for the site and are delighted that the application has now been submitted. We expect the site to appeal to a range of operators across the sector.”
