The structure at the centre of the busy Crossgate and Bonnygate junction is being shifted as a major project gets under way to improve the town’s traffic flow.
It will be given a new home on an extended pavement nearby.
The work is the first phase of a £1.6 million scheme to ease traffic congestion, which will see the road realigned between St Catherine Street and East Bridge where the ATS tyre depot previously stood.
New traffic lights and pedestrian crossings are to be installed, extensive streetscape refurbishment carried out and the Fluthers car park entrance will be repositioned.
As work takes place on the Crossgate, vehicles will only be permitted to exit on to the A91, resulting in changes to bus timetables.
Once this stage is complete, work will move on to the Bonnygate, St Catherine Street, East Bridge, East Burnside and finally Station Road.
The project, being carried out by County Mayo civil engineers Wills Bros, is expected to be completed next summer.
